Online activities designed to spark creativity, imagination and learning. Each one includes a high-resolution image of a work from the Museum’s collection, a close looking activity and a related art project.
Neighbors once called Howell Farm the “ice farm" because they could buy ice from the pond to keep their milk cool on the way to the train station on Pleasant Valley Road. In late January, visitors to the farm will learn about the tools and technology that made ice harvesting a successful business at the turn of the 20th century, and try their hand at using an ice saw out on the pond. Visitors can also help pull ice blocks up the ramp to the ice house, chip ice for ice cream, and make an ice candle to take home!
With map in hand, make your way around the Watershed Reserve in search of clues to find Wally the Woodchuck. This program is part treasure hunt, part nature hike and plenty of imaginative fun. Meet the naturalists, try your hand at chucking wood with a catapult or trebuchet, and search for groundhog holes on this festive winter morning. Each group will remain together, practicing social distancing. Dress for the weather and wear your hiking boots as we celebrate winter and look forward to the return of spring. Ages 5 and up. In-person program. Masks, social distancing, and adult attendance required.
