Wassailing the Apple Trees

Raise a glass of hot cider with us as Terhune Orchards honors the trees that give us our wonderful apples. The ancient British tradition of wassailing the apple trees to protect them from harm is a popular winter celebration at Terhune Orchards that you won’t want to miss! Activities include singing, dancing and playing of primitive instruments, toasts of hot cider and placing gifts of cider-soaked bread in the tree branches while chanting the lively words of praise and New Year. The Handsome Molly Dancers and Kingsessing Morris Dancers will lead us in festive singing and dancing to ensure our orchards have a good harvest in 2020. Warm yourself next to our bonfire (marshmallow roasting included). Live music will be performed all afternoon in the wine barn by Spiced Punch. In addition to basic movement/motor development, socialization, and interaction with others, more time is spent on skills that challenge this age group more. Gymnastic apparatus is utilized to teach hanging, balancing, swinging, jumping, rolling, stretching, twisting and turning as well as familiarity with basic gymnastic skills. 3 years – 6 years Children 3 years old and up have an extra opportunity to work on skills they have been learning in classes or to reinforce skills they have already acquired. Instructors are on hand to provide guidance to your child.

We’ll read “Ten Little Rabbits” by Virginia Grossman, then visit the exhibit New Jersey’s Original People to see different types of tools used, then head back to the STEAM Center for fun hands-on activities. This free program is offered at on Friday 2 pm and Saturday at 10 am and 12 noon. It’s designed for children 6 months to 5 years old and their caregiver. Space is limited, reservations are required. Reservation form is available on the Museum website, email Kerry.Scott@sos.nj.gov to reserve your spot. Reservation requests must be received by 10:00 am the Friday before the program in order for staff to confirm space availability.

Details: Our family-friendly dance features square dances, contra dances, play party games and other traditional American dances; it’s great fun for the whole family, from young children (ages 4 and up) to parents and grandparents and other adult friends. The dances will be led by caller Sue Dupre, and live music will be provided by the Mixed Age Dance Band. Musicians of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the MAD Band - there is a rehearsal immediately before each family dance. The dance is open to people of all ages; no partner is needed; no experience is needed. We always have a grand time! Our Family/Community Dances are a wonderful way for beginners of all ages to get into traditional dancing, in addition to providing a kid-friendly, fun atmosphere.

Details: Come to the WW Arts Center and participate in several projects supporting local service organizations who help our neighbors in need. Join the West Windsor Arts Council, the WW Human Relations Council, and the African American Parent Support Group as we partner with Send Hunger Packing/Mercer Street Friends, Rise Community Services, Crochet for a Cause, and more TBA. Several service projects will be available for you to participate in. We are also seeking the following donations: New children's PJs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, books, stuffed animals, Handknit or crocheted hats and scarves for veterans, Materials for making these items during the event. Items can be dropped off between now and MLK Day at the Arts Center at 952 Alexander Road, West Windsor M-F 10-6 or Sat. 10-4 OR Bring items with you for the DAY OF SERVICE. Families invited.
